چکیده

Theories of stimulus comparison were tested by examining ordinal properties of data obtained with six scaling tasks. Subjects judged simple "ratios" or "differences" of stimulus pairs constructed from a factorial design. In four additional tasks, the same judges also compared relations between pairs of stimulus pairs, judging "ratios of ratios," "ratios of differences," "differences of ratios," and "differences of differences." The data were consistent with a subtractive theory, which asserts that two stimuli are compared by subtraction, regardless of the task, but that judges can compare two stimulus differences by either a ratio or a difference. All six tasks could be related by the subtractive theory using a single set of scale values. Other simple theories, including the theory that "ratio" judgments can be represented by a ratio model, could no~ reproduce the six rank orders (of the six sets of data) using a single set of scale values.

Measurement and the mental map

In order to test between subtractive and ratio theories of stimulus comparison, judges were asked to estimate "ratios" and "differences" of easterliness and westerliness of U.S. cities. "Difference" judgments fit the subtractive model, and "ratio" judgments fit the ratio model. However, "ratios" and "differences" were monotonically related, contrary to the theory that judges compute both relati...

Reason to avoid triangular designs in nonmetric scaling.

Triangular designs analyzed by contemporary nonmetric scaling procedures can yield estimated scales that are nonlinearly related to the "true" scale values. In nonmetric unidimensional scaling, observers rate the "difference," "similarity," or "dissimilarity" of stimulus pairs, and a subtractive model is used to estimate scale values that will reproduce the rank order of the judgments. For exam...

Comparison of two theories of "ratio" and "difference" judgments.

This article examines the hypothesis that judges compare stimuli by ratio and subtractive operations when instructed to judge" "ratios" and "differences." Rule and Curtis hold that magnitude estimations are a power function of subjective values, with an exponent between 1.1 and 2.1. Accordingly, the two-operation model tested assumes magnitude estimations of "ratios" are a comparable power func...

Evidence for a subtractive component in motion adaptation

Adaptation to a moving stimulus changes the perception of a stationary grating and also reduces contrast sensitivity to the adaptor. We determined whether the first effect could be predicted from the second. The contrast discrimination (T vs. C) function for a drifting 7.5 Hz grating test stimulus was determined when observers were adapted to a low contrast (0.075) grating of the same spatial a...

Hybrid ANFIS with ant colony optimization algorithm for prediction of shear wave velocity from a carbonate reservoir in Iran

Shear wave velocity (Vs) data are key information for petrophysical, geophysical and geomechanical studies. Although compressional wave velocity (Vp) measurements exist in almost all wells, shear wave velocity is not recorded for most of elderly wells due to lack of technologic tools. Furthermore, measurement of shear wave velocity is to some extent costly. This study proposes a novel methodolo...
